Questions & Answers

Where is calligraphy useful?

Calligraphy is extremely useful and beautiful when we want to use it to enrich important life milestones, such as communion, baptism, graduation and wedding, or just to brighten up the tables at Christmas and New Year parties. Calligraphy can be used to write out your favourite song, a greeting card to your loved one or a congratulations on your friend's graduation. I can't imagine my life without calligraphy weddings.

Calligraphic details can adorn invitations, menus, seating charts, wedding signage, mirrors with guests' names, table numbers and guest thank-you notes. Modern calligraphy goes on every glass surface of a lovely café that invites with the best coffee in town. And when you're stuck for a gift idea at the last minute, I'll write out a lovely thought for the person you love.

Calligraphy is not limited to paper. I can also write calligraphy on wood, acrylic, glass, stone or even shells.

Calligraphic hand engraving change the bottle perfume into a unique and beautiful gift. Also wine bottleoften given as a gift, it can be a surprise that the recipient will not easily give up. The engraving can be further enhanced with special colours.

What if the invitations are already printed and I've only just thought of calligraphy?

That's not why. Whatever style of invitations you have already made, you can choose the following for the headings traditional or modern calligraphythat will combine style and subtly integrate with other wedding details. We can create a special wedding a very special font. It is especially important that you provide us with a sample invitation and envelopes and addresses in good time.

What if I want my invitation to be fully calligraphed?

The full invitation may also be calligraphed. I can also prepare printout for reprinting more printed invitations. Calligraphic writing requires a little more space. To maintain the minimalist style of the invitation, avoid too long verses and quotations in the text. Let the calligraphic print of your names be the centrepiece of the invitation that steals all the attention, not a rhyme about love that you just happened to find on the internet.

What should the wedding invitation contain?

Each invitation is a written requestInviting someone to come to an agreed place at an agreed time. The invitation should include:

the name of the host,

the host's wishes (I cordially invite you, I cordially invite you, we want to share important moments in our lives, etc.),

an indication of the type of event,

Date,

hour,

country,

an instruction to reply or to confirm your participation "R.S.V.P.",

a dress recommendation or "dress code" (you can also add a colour palette to dictate the colour of your wedding to your guests),

for directions, you can also add a map.

If your event is divided into different activities, you can add a special card to your invitation with details and a timeline of what's happening.

Can you write a verse on a card bought in a supermarket?

No! The cards they offer in the supermarkets are made of paper that is very ungrateful for writing on, and I cannot test it beforehand, so I avoid doing that. I could put a sheet of paper with a card written on it, but these cards are also small, usually A6 (105 mm x 148 mm). There is not enough space on the card for a short verse of nine words, such as 'I wish you a happy birthday, Zlatka'. It is true that calligraphers can write very small texts, but the message of the text for a particular occasion is also important. The purpose of the card is for the addressee to read the message, in this case a birthday greeting. What appears to be a short typed sentence that would take up a small area of paper if printed on a printer, may take up much more space if calligraphed. Because of the laws of calligraphy, it also needs sufficient line space to allow it to 'breathe' and for the lettering to be legible. A purchased greeting card usually already has a message or illustration on the first page, which does not require additional text, Calligraphy loses its unique value on such a mass-printed greeting card. Calligraphers can create a stand-alone work of art from a simple sentence like a birthday card, but it takes time, the right size and quality of paper. So once again, NOT on purchased cards.

Is the calligraphy on the envelopes waterproof?

Experience has shown that nothing to worry about, to smudge the addresses on the envelopes. For peace of mind, I can add an impregnation to the envelopes, but of course this is an additional cost and adds to the turnaround time. There is also a special coating that makes the envelope and the writing resistant to drops, but the coating makes the envelope a bit shiny. I recommend this only for a single copy travelling very far.

Do I need additional envelopes?

Yes! Calligraphy is handmade and we all make mistakes. That's why I require between 10 and 15 % of additional envelopes due to possible clerical or paperwork errors. Please take this into account when ordering your envelopes, as they may not be available in the size or colour you want later.

Do you offer any other services besides calligraphy on envelopes?

Yes! Calligraphically spelled out also names for seating charts, creative wedding wish cards, thank you messages, wedding signs on mirrors, acrylic or wooden signs. I also offer handmade wedding folders and calligraphy engraving. I can also write and engrave calligraphy at events.

Longer calligraphic texts seem too expensive for my pocket. Can I buy some reprints of calligraphic poems?

Yes! You can buy reprints of printed poems such as The National Anthem, the Hippocratic Oath or the Desiderata. Of course, make sure I have them in stock first.

On which surfaces or products can you engrave?

I hand calligraphically engrave on glass, metal and stone. I engrave on perfumery bottles, wine bottles or spirit bottles (whisky, cognac, gin), coffee cups, thermo bottles, knives and cutlery.

Does it matter what the perfume bottle is?

Yes! Perfume bottles are suitable for engraving if they have flat, even surfaces, without recesses or reliefs, and are made of plain, smooth glass. This means that they are not made of frosted glass or glass with a coating which gives only the appearance of frosted glass. Such bottles are not suitable as the coating peels off when engraved. Calligraphy cannot be coloured on a cut-glass bottle.

What should the wine bottle look like for engraving a short text, e.g. "Congratulations on your graduation!"?

The engraved calligraphy is more visible on the dark bottle, but it is also beautiful on bottles of rosé wine. It is also true of a wine or whisky bottle that the surface must be smooth, free of indentations and reliefs. I can print out short text vertically without removing the labels. For more text, the front or back label needs to be removed. Which one is up to you. If the vintage and series of the wine are important to you, it is better to leave it and remove the front label where the calligraphy will be, or vice versa. You can choose a bottle that has a smaller label on the front, in which case you don't need to remove it at all. Depending on the colours of the label, I can also colour the calligraphy. Wines often have gold details in the label, so I can also colour the calligraphy with gold, which is a wonderful combination. Please also note that there may be defects in the glass below the label on the bottle. Often these are small indentations, but they don't affect the engraving much, as I try to avoid these areas, but I can make a single stroke to go around the defect or add decoration to hide it. The wines I offer in my online shop are selected by testing on each individual bottle. They are of high quality and the bottles are also very suitable for engraving. Most of the wines in the shop are in the EUR 21 to EUR 28 price range, so they are not cheap wines, as it would be pointless to embellish them with such elaborate and delicate decoration, which takes time.

Can I wash the engraved jar in the dishwasher?

Handle each container according to the manufacturer's instructions. The colouring on the engraving will fade over time if the jar is frequently washed in the dishwasher. Although the gold calligraphy is beautiful, when the wine is in the glass, you might consider silver colouring (or no colouring), as the colouring is not as noticeable as it is removed as the engraving itself is the same shade when it is gradually rinsed out.

Where do I deliver the bottle and where can I pick it up?

Delivery is possible by post or personal collection in Ljubljana.

How do I donate a bottle? Do you have suitable packaging?

Of course! On request, we can we can also provide a suitable sleeve in different colours for your gift bottle. If desired, you can add a decorative ribbon or string with a seal. The reels are handmade, so it takes some time to make. Order your calligraphy-printed bottle with gift sleeve at least 10 days before the desired deadline.

Live calligraphy at the event creates an unforgettable shopping experience and a special event-going experience. It takes your service to the next level. It's perfect for wine tastings, launching a new product or brand and it's inspiring at weddings. The most common word from clients and guests, as they watch the words transform into beautiful calligraphy before their eyes, is "wow".

Why calligraphy on envelopes?

Why? Hmmm. Let me explain my point of view. Wedding invitations are the first contact with your guests. They can give you an idea of what your wedding will be like. Invitations are addresses are printed out manually. Many couples choose to distribute their wedding invitations in person, as sending them by post is considered too impersonal, so they leave the envelopes, if they have any, unmarked. Through the eyes of a calligrapher, this seems to me very unfair to a beautiful envelope that is calling out to me to put unforgettable touches on it and breathe a whole new life into it.

While personal service is sensitive and imaginative, it is also time-consuming when you have a big wedding planned. It is a good idea to plan your visit. If relatives and friends are not available at the time, personal service can drag on for weeks or even months. This way, some people are invited much earlier than others. Relatives and friends talk to each other and those who have not yet been invited might assume that they will not be invited to the wedding at all. However, when invitations are sent by post, they are usually received by the addressees almost at the same time.

To receive a letter an envelope with a handwritten address is particularly exciting, and is sure to make a unique impression on the invitee. This caring attitude lets your loved ones know that you have gone the extra mile for them and that you really want them by your side for these unforgettable moments. An invitation without an envelope or with an envelope without the addressee written on it gives the impression that you have not thought carefully about who you are inviting.

Couples usually have a set number of invitations printed and about five to ten spare invitations just in case. Don't give the invitee the impression that you have invited them with a spare invitation just because you bumped into them on the days when you are serving invitations. It is a good idea to stick neat stamps on the envelopes to avoid postage being paid or printed stickers being hastily affixed by postal staff, sometimes over the calligraphically spelt address.

When do I need to order calligraphy for envelopes?

It takes me two weeks to calligraphically write addresses on envelopes. It also depends on the following:

how many envelopes you have,

whether you need to print addresses only on the cover envelopes,

whether you also need the address printed on the return envelope,

what colour your envelopes are,

or maybe it's the pearl paper of the envelopes,

what size your envelopes are,

or if you want a specific writing colour.

Don't wait until the last minute. Otherwise, you may have to pay an emergency order surcharge.

What should the mailing list look like?

The list of titles should be typed. Please observe the etiquette of addressing, the correctness of street and road names and the use of capital letters in place names. It often happens that we confuse a street with a road, so it may happen that the invitation does not arrive. I do not check the correctness of the spelling of streets and roads and place names. Please write out the full name of the street or road (e.g. Ljubljanska cesta 100, not Ljubljanska 100 or Ljubljanska c. 100) and the full names of the towns or cities. This will calligraphy on envelopes stood out in particular. There is no difference in price when the title is up to four lines.

Do you offer more calligraphy colours? What about metallic gloss?

Of course! I have several colours and shades in stock. I can also prepare a new shade to match your invitations. Especially the ones with a metallic sheen are charming, which, because of their density, have a particularly fine embossed appearance and feel.

Can I order a calligraphy sample of my name?

Yes, but the samples are for a fee. Customers usually want a sample of their name in metallic gloss ink, because they can't imagine how it will look and feel on paper. They are always delighted with the result.

Does it matter what paper I choose?

Yes! The quality of the paper also affects the appearance of the calligraphy. 100% cotton papers are suitable, but papers with a pearlescent sheen have a harder time accepting ink and are very slow to dry. Pearl paper does not allow the very fine strokes that are a characteristic of Copperplate. The grammage of the paper also affects the calligraphic output, as on very thin paper the ink can bleed through to the other side. For this reason I often suggest papers from my own stock.

Can you write on handmade papers?

Yes, but they need to be treated before writing to make them suitable for calligraphy and to prevent ink from spilling or getting stuck in the fibres.

Can you write a dedication in the book I will give away?

Yes, but here I stick to the tabled letter. That is, I write your thought or greeting on a piece of paper, which you can stick in a book or put in a book. A blank sheet at the beginning of the book is like a pearl. The ink is not absorbed in any way and even after two days it is not completely dry, so it can smear and the book is ruined.

What are your handmade wedding folders like?

Wedding folders They are usually made in A4 format and are mainly used to keep an extract from the civil registry of a marriage. The witness often commissions the folder to store his or her wedding speech, which is then handed over to the newlyweds. They are made of cardboard, handmade paper and bookbinding canvas. White and lavender are the best colours to use, with the addition of white ribbons or tiny artificial flowers. Of course, you can choose your own colour.

Why does the price of engraving vary despite the same amount of text?

Price of the engraving may vary, despite the same amount of text, when it comes to complex preparation on bottles that may be particularly unusually curved. For these, much more time is needed to draw the direction lines. If you want to modern calligraphy, the same strokes must be repeated for the effect obtained when writing with a pen, due to the characteristics of the calligraphic pen itself. For this reason, I use an extra drill bit more when engraving modern calligraphy than I do when engraving monoline engravings.

Do you provide the wine (including whisky, cognac and gin) bottle or do I have to buy it?

The shop sells white and red wine, as well as sparkling wines. I made a shortlist of bottles that I had previously engraved on a trial basis to test the hardness and strength of the glass itself. If you want to choose something completely different, I recommend buying through the online wine shop and sending it directly to our studio. Based on your enquiry and the message to engrave the bottle, I will prepare an estimate for you. After receiving payment and the bottle, I will send you the engraved bottle within 7 working days. Bottles that are cut or coated to give the appearance of cut glass are not suitable for engraving, as the coating will peel off. Choose one with a smaller label, with adequate space for engraving text.

Do you also engrave sparkling wines and champagnes?

Yes, but carefully as the bottle is under pressure. I mostly engrave on these bottles "single-line", in one stroke. I don't exaggerate the lines when there is a large amount of text in order to imitate the stroke of a calligraphic pen, which, because of its shape and its characteristic use, produces a broad, longitudinal stroke. Hand engraving is also slightly deeper than laser. Engraving therefore interferes with the surface of the bottle and can change its physical properties. However, the bottles engraved so far have all survived the engraving and a few hours in the car.

What is the most commonly engraved quote suitable for a bottle?

The best wine is the wine we drink with friends.

The best whisky is the whisky you drink with friends.

Congratulations on your graduation.

Sometimes a glass of wine with a good friend is all the therapy you need.

There is nothing like staying home for real comfort. (Jane Austen)

The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind. (Humphrey Bogart)

Too much of anything is bad, but too much of whisky is barely enough. (Mark Twain)
