WHY CALLIGRAPHY?

Calligraphy is an ancient art form that dates back to a time when handwritten documents were handcrafted with special care and attention to detail. Each letter is crafted with love, passion and a sense of aesthetics, allowing the texts to convey not only meaning but also beauty and artistic value.

Calligraphy has evolved throughout history in different cultures around the world, giving rise to many different writing styles and techniques. However, what unites all these different forms of calligraphy is a love of the beauty and harmony of letters, words and texts.

Calligraphy has successfully reclaimed its place not only as a traditional art, but also in the graphic design of printed materials. It is often seen in logos and is also popular on wedding stationery and signs. In addition, calligraphic lettering adorns the signage in many lovely cafés.

In a world that is increasingly automated and digitalised, calligraphy offers the possibility to connect with the analogue world, with our own hand creating beauty on paper.

Here are some of the reasons why calligraphy is such a special and useful art:

  1. Elegance and aesthetics: Calligraphy boasts an exceptional aesthetic. Every stroke of the pen or brush is deliberate and precise, creating beautiful and harmonious letterforms that become an artistic element.
  2. Uniqueness: Calligraphy can turn simple words into unique works of art. Each piece is unique because it is handmade and expresses the style and personality of the calligrapher.
  3. A wide range of applications: Calligraphy can be used in different contexts. It is popular for designing invitations, greeting cards, logos, wedding decorations and other art projects.
  4. Turning words into art: Calligraphy allows words to become more than just a communication tool. With the right styles and colours, the text becomes a work of art in itself, capable of expressing deeper emotions and meaning.
  5. Preserving cultural heritage: Calligraphy preserves a rich cultural heritage and tradition of writing in different cultures around the world. The study and practice of calligraphy contribute to the preservation of these precious artistic techniques.
  6. Personal expression and creativity: Calligraphy allows calligraphers to express their creativity and personal style through writing. Each calligrapher develops his or her own unique approach and expresses his or her artistic vision.

Calligraphy is not only an art of beautiful writing, but also a way of expressing oneself. It is a way of improving fine-motor skills, preserving the tradition of handwriting and creating attractive products for different occasions.

With its rich history and versatility, calligraphy is an art that remains relevant and appreciated in the modern world. Calligraphy continues to evolve and adapt to modern needs. With the advent of digital tools, calligraphers are now able to create digital calligraphic products that can be used online and in graphic design.

WHO RUNS THE CALLIGRAPHY COURSE?

Zlatka Trstenjak Rampre has been devoted to the art of calligraphy for more than a decade. He skilfully combines Gothic, Uncialo and Copperplate in his work and often uses modern calligraphy for wedding products, turning simple lettering into beautiful works of art. He doesn't limit his creations to real calligraphy written in ink, but also creates it digitally, making it a little more time-consuming and affordable.

Zlatka's approach to teaching is based on understanding. Rather than just demonstrating techniques, she believes in conveying the art of calligraphy in a way that anyone who takes up calligraphy can understand, making complex strokes look simple and understandable. It's not just about guiding the lettering; it's about helping the heart to find its expression through the ink.

Calligraphy is not just about imitating the strokes and letters according to the rules, but about using this skill in different situations in life.

The practical applications of calligraphy are vast and varied. Beyond traditional writing on paper, the potential of calligraphy is enormous. Students can use their calligraphy skills to have their own unique T-shirt printed, help friends decorate a party or decorate different seasonal holidays or gifts for loved ones.

Calligraphy is just the apparently repetitive writing of letters on a line. But as it progresses, it becomes a versatile skill, a tool of expression that can be used creatively in countless ways. Zlatka believes in empowering her students to take their knowledge beyond the classroom and into the world, making a mark that is uniquely theirs.

HOW WILL CALLIGRAPHY BENEFIT ME?

Learning calligraphy and handwriting have many benefits that go beyond technical skills. Handwriting and calligraphy are often seen as a thing of the past. But handwriting is an important skill that needs to be nurtured and is still very important in today's world. It helps develop both cognitive and physical abilities, and is beneficial for our mental health.

Handwriting is a physical activity that helps develop fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. It also helps to stimulate cognitive development by requiring us to think critically and use our problem-solving skills. Writing improves creativity and also allows personal expression. It is a visual art form that requires our attention to detail and eye-hand coordination.

Compared to typing, writing activates more areas of the brain when we use different rhythms and paces. It improves comprehension, learning and ensures retention of the knowledge learnt. It is particularly good for children who are learning to read, because by forming the letter they gain a deeper understanding of the anatomy of individual letters and therefore recognise them more easily when they read them.

We don't need to put handwriting and digital tools at opposite poles. Of course we all need to learn to type, including children, but we should not learn to type at the expense of handwriting.

The manuscript is a vital part of our existence. What we value is reflected in what we teach our next generations.

Why learning calligraphy and handwriting is extremely useful:

Improving brain activityA: Calligraphy and handwriting activate different parts of the brain responsible for language, perception and movement. This stimulates neural connections, which can lead to improved cognitive function, increased creativity and better problem-solving skills.

Improving memory: Studies have shown that handwriting can improve the ability to remember and later recall information. By taking an active part in the process of note-taking, we are better able to embed and retain the information we have learned.

Personalisation of projectsA: Calligraphy skills allow us to add a personal touch to our projects, notes and written texts. Developing your own writing style allows you to create unique and memorable creations in a variety of contexts, whether at work, studying or in your hobbies.

Improved motor skills: Learning calligraphy and practising handwriting help to improve fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. These skills are important not only for writing but also for other activities such as drawing, painting or playing an instrument.

Meditation and relaxationA: Practicing calligraphy and handwriting can prove to be a meditative activity that promotes relaxation, increases mindfulness and helps to maintain focus. Concentrating on the strokes, shapes and rhythms of the letters can calm the mind and reduce stress.

Artistic expressionA: Calligraphy and handwriting are not only technical skills, but also a form of artistic expression. It allows you to explore your creativity, style and personality through beautifully written words. Whether you choose traditional calligraphy styles or express your creativity through contemporary handwriting trends, you have the opportunity to express yourself and create artistic masterpieces.

Combining these advantages is why learning calligraphy and handwriting is so attractive and rewarding, not only as a skill but also as a means of improving your mind and spirit.

Escape from screens: calligraphy as a path to mindfulness and balance

Introduction

In the pulse of today's digital world, where screens light up our lives more than the sun, a hidden issue casts a shadow over global health on screen addiction. From smartphones to computers, screens grab our attention and give us an unhealthy dopamine boost, causing a variety of physical and mental problems.

In the midst of this powerful digital domination, the calligraphy as a bridge to peace and meaningful cooperation. The purpose of this article is to untangle the cocoon of screen addiction, to delve deeper into the role of Calligraphy offering a creative escape to balance and focus in this digital chaos.

Understanding screen addiction

Dependence on the screen permeates our society, leaving a trail of consequences for mental and physical health. The World Health Organisation has recognised digital gaming addiction as a mental health disorder, while numerous studies have linked too much time spent in front of a screen to problems such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression and developmental problems in children. The flip side of the overuse of digital devices, which constantly snatch our attention, is that it overshadows the richness of the physical world and replaces it with virtual interactions, endless scrolling and the constant buzzing of notifications.

"We are raising generations of blind, obese and forgetful people", said Manfred Spitzer in a recent interview with Val 202., neuroscientist and head of the University Psychiatric Hospital Ulm, studying the impact of digital devices on brain development. In his book Digital Dementia, he discusses the harmful impact of digital devices on children.

Dopamine loop

Screen time triggers the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure and reward. This traps individuals in a continuous pursuit of pleasure through digital interactions. This endless cycle reinforces the neural pathways that prioritise these digital rewards, reinforcing the desire to continuously interact with the screen at the expense of other life experiences. Renowned scientists and researchers have argued that the dopamine impact of spending too much time in front of screens is worrying. They link it to reduced concentration, impaired social interactions and mental health problems.

Dependence on the screen

Sweden's return to traditional learning

In a marked shift, Sweden, after experimenting with digital learning returns to traditional educational methods. Initially, Sweden introduced tablets in schools, including kindergartens, to integrate modern technology into early learning environments. However, this approach has led to an unintended reduction in students' basic skills such as reading and writing.

Faced with these challenges, Sweden's Minister for Education, Lotta Edholm, has led the task of reassessing the country's educational approach. Recognising the essential role of physical books and handwriting in educational development, Edholm advocated a return to these fundamental elements. In her August statement, the Education Minister announced the reversal of the previous mandate and the abolition of the compulsory use of digital devices in kindergartens.

The negative effects of digital learning tools include physical inactivity, impaired concentration and reduced fine motor skills.

This step, which includes the abolition of digital education for children up to the age of six, underlines Sweden's determination to strengthen basic educational skills. This further underlines the importance of traditional learning resources in supporting educational progress and development.

The Swedish example is a critical point of reflection for global education strategies, underlining the importance of basic skills and the need for a balanced approach to integrating digital tools into learning environments.

Calligraphy as an escape

In the swirl of digital noise, calligraphy whispers an invitation to tranquillity and mindfulness. Calligraphy as a historical art form requires patience, precision and presence. Individuals around the world have discovered a unique solace in the graceful dance of ink and pen on paper. Calligraphy is also a silent protest against digital noise. Personal testimonies highlight experiences of heightened attention, reduced anxiety and reconnection with tactile creativity, proving that calligraphy is a powerful antidote to digital overload.

In our fast-paced digital world, we are used to quick rewards: 'likes' on social networks, notifications of new mail, fast-paced video games... This regular and continuous release of dopamine makes us feel good when using digital tools. But the constant stimulation and expectation of instant gratification can contribute to stress, anxiety and feelings of impatience.

Calligraphy is a beacon of calm, undisturbed focus in a world that is constantly connected, yet yearns for true connectedness and peace.

That's why few people have the patience to take up calligraphy seriously, because it offers no immediate rewards. This ancient art form requires extreme patience, a lot of practice and attention to very small details. But it allows the artist to engage in a deep connection with himself.

The process of calligraphy encourages the individual to be quiet, patient and concentrated. The precise nature of the creation of each letter and word forces the creator to slow down and ground himself in the moment. This deliberate slowness and precision provides an opportunity to disconnect from the digital frenzy and offer a quiet relaxation. As the pen glides across the paper, the lack of digital stimulation and the absence of continuous dopamine-driven stimulation allow for a healthy and calm experience. The mind finds peace in the rhythm and flow of the pen, and the soul enjoys the silence and tangible creation of beauty.

In this space, artists find not just an escape, but a return to the intrinsic rewards of creativity, attention and self-expression - a gentle reminder in our busy world that not all fulfillment is instantaneous and that true beauty and contentment lie in patience.

Writing or calligraphy as an escape from digitalisation

Finding the balance

Drugs, alcohol or screens are different forms of dependence that lead to addiction and lure young souls into darkness.
In a world where everyone is immersed in screens and dots, the ancient art of calligraphy appears as a beacon of shining light. While TVs, phones and tablets constantly call for our attention, the graceful dance of ink and pen on paper whispers a peaceful invitation to conscious presence.
Accepting calligraphy becomes a retreat into a realm where the digital cacophony fades into silence, where every gesture is a breath and every sign a meditation. The screens that enslave our gaze find their place of honour with calligraphy only as a vessel for capturing and sharing the beauty born of our own hands, not as endless whirlpools that draw us into the abyss of passive observation. Just as the calligrapher shapes each stroke with precision, so too does he or she carve out a shelter from the digital storm; a place where creation and expression take the lead without being overshadowed by screens. The art of calligraphy thus becomes not only a practice of writing, but also a gentle resistance against the onslaught of the digital age, a reclaiming of our right to be creators and not mere consumers in the limitless tapestry of life.

The importance of presence in the physical world

In a world where our digital footprint seems to be almost as important as our physical existence, it becomes necessary to stress the importance of maintaining a tangible presence in a tangible world. It is essential to realise that while the digital realm offers limitless opportunities and benefits, our existence is rooted in human interactions, experiences and connections that go beyond digital communication.

At a time when society is gradually moving towards a predominantly digital existence - from the increasing dominance of artificial intelligence, to smart shops without staff, online banking, the abolition of cash, teleworking and distance education, and the persistent drive towards a mandatory digital footprint - it is crucial to ask about the cost of these digital benefits. The systematic pursuit of full digital integration inadvertently forces individuals to give up the richness of human contact, a fundamental aspect that has defined humanity for centuries.

As various sectors continue to drive us towards a purely digital existence, the big question is: How toWhat does it mean to be human in a world without human touch? The emphasis on digital presence is slowly eroding the boundaries of our physical existence, turning attention and awareness into commodities traded for likes, shares and digital validation. The encroachment of the digital world into all aspects of our lives not only detracts from the richness of human experience, but also fosters a culture of constant distraction, reduced empathy and increased anxiety.

The digitisation of existence, which challenges interpersonal relationships.

Potential scenarios about our future, in which humanity would be inextricably linked to digital tools and artificial intelligence through neural connections, add to this concern. While these advances promise unparalleled efficiency, they also threaten to undermine the essence of our humanity - the warmth of a handshake, the comfort of an embrace and the feelings of shared joy.

In navigating this complex digital landscape, it becomes paramount to strike a balance to ensure that our engagement with the digital world does not overshadow our presence in the physical world. It is essential to protect human interactions, creativity and physical connections and ensure that they thrive alongside our digital engagement. The task before us involves conscientiously charting a path that embraces the benefits of digital progress without allowing it to undermine the core of what makes us fundamentally human.

This journey involves an ongoing effort and a shared commitment to prioritising human connectedness, nurturing moments of physical presence and protecting our human essence in the midst of an ever-evolving digital panorama. In doing so, we preserve not only our humanity, but also the richness, depth and vibrancy of our shared human experience.

Technology can make our lives immeasurably easier, improve productivity and give us access to a myriad of information and learning opportunities. However, it is important to use technology sparingly and thoughtfully.

Genuine human communication without the distractions of digitalisation.

The importance of Balanced Use of Technology

Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships:

While social networks and other digital platforms allow us to connect with people all over the world, it is important that we also maintain and nurture personal connections."Face-to-face" personal communication plays a key role in building deep and meaningful relationships.

Reducing Digital Exhaustion:

Excessive use of digital devices can lead to digital exhaustion, stress and health problems such as vision problems or neck and back pain. It is important to take regular breaks from screens to focus on other activities.

Calligraphy

Improving Mental Health:

Limiting time spent on digital devices can help us reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, and improve our overall well-being and mental health.

Increase Productivity:

We are at the crossroads of the need to rebalance the use of digital tools and to integrate them thoughtfully into our daily lives. Let us listen to the call of calligraphy, a whispering invitation to escape the digital abyss and bask in the warmth of creative expression, mindfulness and balance.

The soul of Slovenia through the national anthem

Slovenia's national anthem, "Zdravljica", echoes the nation's rich history of values and cultural heritage. As a symbol of unity and pride, "Zdravljica" holds a special place in the hearts of the Slovenian people.

The origin of the Hymn

Greetings carries an important message of unity and peace in Europe. The poem is the work of the author Francet Prešeren, and her words are still relevant today. The Zdravljica is not only a symbol of Slovenia, but also expresses the desire for peaceful coexistence and freedom of expression.

The importance of the anthem has also been recognised at international level, as the manuscript of Prešeren's Zdravljica has been awarded the European Heritage Label. This prestigious award is a fine recognition of Slovenian cultural heritage.

The first publication of the Hymn was closely linked to the abolition of censorship, which was an important achievement during the Spring of Nations. Freedom of the press was one of the key demands of the 1848 movement for national and liberal freedom. The pursuit of individual freedom, including freedom of speech, is also a fundamental principle of the documents that shape European integration, such as the European Convention on Human Rights and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The seventh stanza of Zdravljica became the national anthem only in 1990, a few months before the December plebiscite on independence.

RS anthem on a cup

Interpreting the symbolism in the text and music

The whole poem has 56 verses and 8 stanzas. Each verse of the Lullaby is filled with metaphors and sincere emotions, symbolising unity, peace and celebration of life. In addition, analyse the musical composition and how it complements the message of the hymn, creating a moving expression of national pride.

Values in the Anthem

The poem is also written in a special visual poetic form carmen figuratum, depicting the image of a wine goblet, as it is a drinking fountain. It is one of the few hymns that are not divine. It rejects fighting and strife and seeks the unity and friendship of all nations. It emphasises solidarity, hospitality, freedom and tolerance. Values that are intertwined with the national spirit. Composer Stanko Premrl added music to the message of the anthem, which expresses the pride of a nation.

Shaping Slovenian identity

Zdravljica played a key role in promoting a sense of national identity during difficult periods in Slovenian history. Slovenian national anthem is a testament to the nation's perseverance, values and unity. Its eternal words and enchanting melody evoke strong emotions in every Slovenian heart, uniting the country through love for its land, its culture and its future.

National Anthem of the Republic of Slovenia

Interesting facts

  • The beginning of the Anthem can also be found on the 2 euro coin.
  • Zdravljica as a protocol gift: during the Slovenian Presidency of the EU Council, NUK presented Zdravljica to European nations in a special publication. When meta-intelligence creates the perfect image in seconds, we are paradoxically returning to our roots. Calligraphic engraving is the art that turns gifts into everlasting memories and the point of sale into an unforgettable experience. Engraving and calligraphy have been linked for several years now, creating beautiful gifts for the special occasions.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy, the almost forgotten art of lettering, is proudly returning to the throne. But this time, not just on paper, but carved into the surface of various objects, which become a timeless story.
Personalisation is no longer just a trend, but the standard. However, there is a big difference between laser printing, which any machine can do, and calligraphic engraving, where the artist freely engraves the letters into the surface with a steady hand and an engraving machine. The line that emerges under the hands of a master carries the energy of the moment and a uniqueness that artificial intelligence cannot replicate.
When you give a bottle of fine wine or a bottle of perfume engraved with a personal dedication in elegant calligraphy, you are not just giving an object. You are giving respect, time and attention.

In an era of digital saturation, we are witnessing an interesting phenomenon. The more we are surrounded by generic products and automated processes, the more we crave something authentic. A gift becomes a story. Prestige lies in customisation. The calligrapher creates the composition by hand, adapting the inscription to the shape of the bottle, the layout of the labels and the colour scheme of the brand.

Gold and silver accents

For that true »royal« feel, the engraved lines are filled with special metallic pastes that catch the light and accentuate the depth of the cut.
Each message is thoughtfully positioned, sometimes vertically next to the label, sometimes in the place where the label has been removed, to bring the content you intended to the recipient to the fore.

»The «Wow" effect: Calligraphy as experiential marketing

In modern marketing, products are no longer enough; consumers are looking for an experience. That's where live calligraphic engraving comes in. Imagine a new perfume launch or a wine tasting where the customer watches the artist create their name or personal thought on the bottle in front of their eyes.
The quiet sound of the machine and the surgical precision of the movements create a hypnotic atmosphere. This is the moment when the client becomes part of the creative process. This kind of experiential marketing instantly takes a brand to a new level, not only selling the customer a product, but also giving them an unforgettable memory and a feeling of specialness.

More than just a gift - an investment in relationships

Live personalisation is becoming the new luxury currency. Calligraphic engraving on selected materials such as decanters, cake knives, perfumes and cosmetics or prestigious bottles is a rebellion against transience. It is proof that some things, like beautiful handwriting and sincere relationships, are worth keeping forever.

Heartfelt gifts for special occasions

Hand engraving of calligraphic messages allows personalising different products to suit different occasions. For example, an engraved personalised message retains the value of gifts given for occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or other anniversaries we celebrate. In addition engraving can also be carried out on perfume,  a bottle of wine, Cognac or on the jars. This transforms ordinary objects into precious and timeless exhibits that remind us of the good times.

Awards, commendations, thanks and certificates

Calligraphy on awards. This is one of my favourite calligraphy services.

While digitalisation offers convenience and accessibility at every turn, I still cherish a strong connection with the handwriting. I feel the need to preserve tradition and the love of handwriting. It is impossible to predict the future or to guarantee that technology will be always, everywhere and accessible to everyone.

That is why I am cultivating this sparkling love affair with beautiful letters and wonderful calligraphic colours.

Calligraphed names on a thank-you note for a job well done.

What is the value of an unnamed award or commendation?

For the last decade, awards have been given not only to the winners, but also to all participants simply for taking part. Inevitably, this raises various questions about the value and relevance of such acknowledgements and commendations.

Is it resentment at a mediocre result, or envy at someone else's success? Perhaps the motive for too frequent praise is just a misguided way of motivating everyone involved?

Acknowledgements - calligraphic inscription of the slogan with golden runes.

But these questions are not the point of this note. We are more interested in the reason for granting charters without names? Who actually awards the bianco commendations or certificates, and why doesn't the winner, participant or recipient deserve to have their name inscribed?

A terrible gap in awards, commendations and certificates

I still have my primary school report card, various commendations and awards, including service commendations and medals. There are not many, but all of them have my name on them. That's why I am proud of them, even if they are only modestly tucked away in a drawer.

Over the last few years, I have often been commissioned to put names on various documents.

Some were of such exceptional importance that the recipient would have been proud to display them on his or her wall. But how, when instead of a name and surname, there is a gaping hole.

One of the reasons is probably that there is no time when the event is off the organiser's premises and the names are not yet known.

Examples include various competitions. In the past, of course, names were entered by hand, but nowadays we can print the name. When it comes to awarding charters with known recipients, there is hardly any excuse. Another reason may be that the skill of writing beautifully is disappearing.

With the advancement of technology, the preservation of manuscripts has become time-consuming and irrelevant, overlooked and forgotten in curricula for years. As an artistic expression, handwriting is a rarity. However, both handwriting and calligraphy have their own charm, which adds value and credibility to any document.

Awards with calligraphic writing of names on a folder

The awarding of a certificate, diploma or certificate of appreciation deserves a ceremony

The award of the Charter reflects the importance of the opportunity and the achievement. However, when the Charter is presented without the name inscribed, the ceremony is somewhat nullified.

It becomes an empty gesture that fails to capture the meaning and weight of the moment. The missing name on the document denies the individual the full experience of pride and honour that should accompany such an important milestone.

The solution is at your fingertips

At Literas calligraphy I can arrange for the calligraphy of the names on your important documents. I can also design and print them for you, or arrange for names to be inscribed on your existing ones. With superbly designed certificates, you will prove to your colleagues and recipients that they are truly deserving of the award, and that their contribution is indeed very important, appreciated and noticed.

Calligraphy on envelopes - is it really expensive?

Is calligraphy expensive? This is a question that often arises when we think about the beauty and complexity of this timeless art form. And the answer is not as simple as one might think. Calligraphy, with its charming strokes and precisely crafted letterforms, holds a special place in the hearts of many. But its true value goes beyond aesthetics. Let's explore together why calligraphy is not cheap?

Calligraphic title in ornate Copperplate script.

Is it ordinary writing or art?

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. But sometimes it wasn't art. It was something ordinary. Of course, not all people were literate. Literacy was somehow reserved for scholars. But it was the only way of communicating in writing. Calligraphy was used to write down official documents and biblical texts. Even today, we should value this privilege very much. Everywhere in the world, children are already deprived of the opportunity to learn to write.

Today, calligraphy is an admirable skill that requires long-term learning and dedication. This is almost impossible to achieve in this day and age, when we expect an immediate response or reward for everything we do. "superpower".

Learning calligraphy requires quite a bit of perseverance, dedication, almost stubborn heartedness. Progress is slow, sometimes almost invisible. At this point, many give up. But with persistence, the reward is guaranteed. If we persevere with calligraphy, we reap many benefits:

Learning calligraphy requires a lot of practice. It is useful to practise the basic strokes before moving on to learning the full strokes. It pays to be progressive.

Creative expression

Calligraphy allows you to unleash your creativity and turn words into beautiful art. With Copperplate, you can create stunning and ornate letters that add a personal touch to any project.

Emotional relaxation

In a fast-paced digital world, calligraphy offers a calming escape. As you focus on each stroke and curve, you enter a state of conscious relaxation, reducing stress and improving your overall well-being.

Unique personal style

Developing your own calligraphic style separates you from a world dominated by digital communication. Your handwritten notes, invitations or even social media posts will stand out with a touch of sophistication and elegance.

Linking tradition with modern technology

Copperplate style has a rich history that connects you to centuries of skilled craftsmen. By learning this traditional craft, you become part of a timeless family that combines the past with its modern way of life. You can also create your calligraphy digitally, forging a link between an ancient skill and the digital world.

Improved attention to detail

Calligraphy sharpens your eye for detail and increases accuracy. It teaches patience and discipline, as each stroke requires careful thought. It also reinforces focus in other aspects of life.

Improving handwriting

Calligraphy exercises help you perfect your handwriting skills, making your daily writing more organised. You will effortlessly impress others with your legible and elegant writing.

Hand-calligraphed address on the envelope

Calligraphed title.

Calligraphed titles. But is there anything better than invitations?

Beautiful invitations invite special people, to experiences that we want to share with our loved ones and preserve in special memories. A wedding, a christening, a birthday celebration or something similar and so important. Our life milestones deserve the best, of course. We have special clothes for the day, a beautiful venue, musicians, the most beautiful decoration possible, gorgeous flowers and we want to immortalise it all so we hire a photographer. And why not make our invitations and other printed materials just as special?

Even if the invitations are printed, it's nice and sometimes etiquette to have handwritten addresses on the envelopes, but it's even nicer if they're handwritten on the envelopes. with real calligraphy. But the price for a single envelope with a calligraphed address may seem high.

How much does calligraphy on envelopes cost?

As a calligrapher, I am convinced that the prices are affordable. In my online shop current price EUR 6,90. This price also includes a high quality envelope, one that can be written on with a calligraphy pen without spilling ink. At the moment, quality envelopes of this kind are priced at Avon between EUR 1 and EUR 1,50. Of course, I can also write on envelopes provided by the customer. Well, let's look at the matter in a little more detail.

Calligraphed address for the invitation.

In Slovenia, invitations are mostly hand-delivered. Imagine my disappointed look when I design your wedding invitations or round birthday party invitations and then you tell me you would just like envelopes without addresses. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am when I cannot explain to you what an occasion you are missing. You're missing the "wow" effect, that I feel when I put a calligraphy in someone's hands or when they receive it in the mail.

My disappointment is mainly because I know that you are missing the opportunity to appreciate the art of calligraphy and the special enthusiasm of your loved ones, who would tell you that they have never received such a wonderful invitation.

The reaction when they receive a beautiful calligraphy envelope:

  • What an envelope!
  • And what is this handwritten?
  • That is impossible!
  • I didn't know anyone else was doing it.

Calligraphed address on the envelope.

You miss the excitement, even the surprise, that their address is handwritten, which of course confirms that you have done your best for them, and so of course they will be most happy to accept. And that feeling is priceless for me.

And what would the origin of the envelope be if it could speak in a fairy tale world? Surely it would whisper that it is disappointed because it will never live up to the mission for which it was created. Not only to hold the most beautiful invitation, but also to have someone write a name or address on it, to be touched by a stamp and to be carried to the addressee by a 'letter carrier'.

Yes, it looks great, but it's too expensive!

It's true that some things cost three times as much just by mentioning the word wedding or similar. Flowers are suddenly three times more expensive when we tell the florist it is for a wedding, and cakes are sometimes more expensive just for the occasion. This is not the norm, but it happens a lot.

Calligraphed address on the envelope.

Price of calligraphy on envelopes is, for the most part, even somewhat union-like, given the time and material invested. Especially since most calligraphers prefer not to offer it, precisely because of the time challenge it represents. Calligraphers do this exceptionally and only as a complementary service to round off their offer of designing invitations, seating charts and other printed materials for events.

What all influences the price of calligraphed envelopes and how are they made in the first place?

1. Calligraphic materials

Traditional calligraphy requires specialised she wrote. High-quality handles can fetch a high price, up to €200.

2. Ink

The ink used in calligraphy is often made from natural pigments, which can be expensive to produce. In addition, certain types of ink, such as gold or metallic versions, can add to the cost. Here you can see how Sumi ink is made.

3. Choosing the right paper

Choosing the right paper is crucial for optimum calligraphy results. High-end acid-free or handmade papers are considerably more expensive. Most calligraphers do not want to write on papers that they do not choose themselves. The paper must be of good quality to prevent the ink from spilling and spreading outwards through the fibres (feathering). Unfriendly to calligraphers are metallic/clear envelopes on which the ink runs/scratches and instead of a beautiful stroke, a puddle is formed. The calligrapher must then add a few drops of gum arabic to the ink to the correct consistency to prevent this bleeding.

4. Learning and experience as a calligrapher

The price of calligraphy is, of course, based on the skill, which requires long-term learning and regular practice to be at a high level. A high level of attention to the smallest details, perfect alignment, the same slope over the whole product, and the composition of the title according to the shape and size of the envelope are also important. While an inexperienced eye may not notice beginner's calligraphic mistakes, the calligraphy of an experienced calligrapher will already be more appealing in appearance.

5. Length of the title

Titles also play a key role. I can only write your names on the envelopes if you are going to deliver the invitations in person, but for snail mail, I write out the full addresses. When the addressee has several names or surnames, or when I include an academic title, the address takes much longer as the alignment is more complex. You also need to take into account the postal rules in each country and choose a registered settlement depending on where the envelope will be going. In the USA, they have a centre alignment of addresses. I even prefer this, as it leaves a lot of room for creative decoration. Postmen are probably a little less enthusiastic. Only a skilled calligrapher can do all this, and of course the price is commensurate with that. Calligraphers charge very different amounts for envelopes.

Calligraphy for beginners

Calligraphic pens and inks.

Prices for calligraphy on an envelope also range from €4 to €9 abroad. It also depends to some extent on geography and the local standard of living. Of course, calligraphers who are just starting out in the business, or who just want to earn extra money on top of their regular job, tend to pay lower prices. Calligraphy by a beginner and by an experienced master is, of course, very different to the eye. Everyone is a beginner once and prices accordingly.

6. Timing

The key to pricing is, of course, the time the calligrapher spends on a single address on the envelope. Let me explain. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to write a 3-line headline - just to write it. Only one line for the title in Copperplate or Engroser´s style calligraphy requires 4 horizontal lines, and in the second and third lines an extra line for the height of the numbers, so + 2 extra lines. In addition, there are some slashes for the slope of the typeface as it is written at a certain angle (52° to 55°), I usually make 6 slashes on a C5 envelope. So 20 lines in total for a single heading of three lines. For four-line headings, this is 25 lines. Of course, everything can be written with a dash, you will say! This is rarely the case.

The LED light bar in combination with a marker is the perfect tool for calligraphers. When writing on dark envelopes, you need to draw lines as the light does not penetrate the paper.

The lines across the light plate are clearly visible through the thin white envelope.

The use of a highlighter and a light bar is only possible on very transparent white envelopes. But such transparent envelopes are usually not of such high quality or are too delicate. As the paper is thicker this is not possible. I mostly write on very dark envelopes, where line drawing is essential. Remember that these lines need to be lined once the ink has dried thoroughly. Before the lines are graded, it is necessary to assess correctly whether the ink is completely dry. The percentage of moisture in the air also has a great influence on the drying time and I can be too quick.

Calligraphy

The calligraphically written title is waiting for me to line up the lines. I will do this only when the ink is well dry.

Before writing, I always check the headings to see how many lines I can write them in and decide the correct height for the first line on the envelope. This is to ensure that all the headings are uniformly written and consistent with each other in terms of font style, font size and the positioning of the heading on the envelope. In the list of addresses, I first look for those with the longest address, double first names or surnames. This makes it easier to create a template or foundation for all the other headings. I want the first line to be just the right height, because otherwise all the shorter headings will hang too high on the envelope.

Calligraphic title on the envelope - Sumi ink has a slightly shiny appearance even when dry, so it is easy to misjudge if it is already dry.

7. Calligraphic writing requires a break

Calligraphy is also a physical challenge. Let's take a concrete example of my commission. The client ordered 250 calligraphed addresses on their envelopes for the greeting cards they had already produced. Taking into account the 20 minutes of writing time for one envelope mentioned above, that's 5,000 minutes (these were 4-line addresses for foreign countries, so even more attention is needed because of the foreign names.

For 250 envelopes, I need a good 83 hours of writing time. Just writing.  This time does not include communication with the client and other administration. This is purely a writing time.

Of course, this requires pauses. No matter how much calligraphers observe the correct posture and the correct grip of the calligraphic handle, it is necessary to take breaks in between work. I did not take into account the handling of envelopes during the writing time. After writing, they must be put away in a suitable place to dry and space must be made for new ones. This is all part of the organisation of work and the layout of the working areas, so this time is not included in the 20 minutes.

A final thought

The appeal of calligraphy lies not only in its enchanting beauty, but also in the dedication and craftsmanship required to master this art. From the initial investment in tools and materials to the relentless pursuit of perfection, calligraphy requires time, perseverance and even financial commitment. However, for those who appreciate the precise elegance of this ancient art, the price becomes secondary to the immense joy and satisfaction of creating something truly remarkable.
